Energy
Saving Tips
Save
money on energy costs with these handy tips!
Lighting
Replace existing light controls with electronic motion sensors
and timers to shut off lights automatically when not in use.
Also using dimmers will reduce energy costs and are cool!
Replace standard light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs.
Fluorescent bulbs will last longer and use only one-third the
energy as standard bulbs do.
If you're not using a light, turn it off! This is probably the
most energy saving tip for lighting. Yes your mother was right
when she told you to turn out that light.
Replace light bulbs that only get occasional use with a lower
wattage bulb.
When remodeling, replace recessed lighting with air-tight models
to save costs on heating and airconditioning. Leaks in lighting
fixtures cost you money and comfort.
Fuel Efficiency
Have your Air Conditioning/Furnace checked for efficiency in
fall and spring. Certain units need adjusting and will work better
when serviced regularly. This includes cleaning coils, adjusting
coolant pressure and cleaning burners.
Replace furnace filters regularly to achieve maximum efficiency
and cut down on dust, dander and pollen counts.
Replace standard shower heads with low-flow models. These can
save 1-3 gallons per minute depending on the model you choose.
This will in turn reduce hot water usage and save on your gas
bill.
Lower your thermostat a few degrees at night and bulk up on
the blankets. Reducing temperatures can save up to 2% per degree
reduced.
Closing off unused rooms and closing vents to those rooms not
in use can save a bundle. Why heat or cool an area of your home
you never use?
When not using your fireplace close the damper to keep out drafts.
If you never use it, think about sealing it off year-round to
save even more.
When remodeling, consider installing exhaust fans in kitchens
and bathrooms. This will help reduce humidity in the bathroom
and help keep the kitchen less greasy and odor free.
Install a high-efficiency furnace or water heater when remodeling.
This will really save you money. Studies show that you will get
back the extra cost spent in as little as a few years.
During the Summer months, set your thermostat between 75-78
degrees, relying more on fans for cooling off. Ceiling fans and
traditional box fans also help distribute cool air from air conditioning.
During the cooler hours of the day, using fans to blow in cool
air will significantly reduces energy cost.
During the hotter hours of the day, close curtains and blinds
to keep cool air in and heat out. Consider installing energy
efficient windows during your next remodel to really cut costs
on heating and air conditioning.
Appliances
Install high-efficiency appliances when remodeling, such as
refrigerators, dishwashers, freezers, etc. This can save big
money. Studies show that you will get back the extra cost spent
in as little as a few years.
Lower the water heater setting to 120 degrees fahrenheit for
energy savings and better safety for children. If your water
heater settings aren't in degrees, use put a cooking thermometer
under a faucet to calculate the temperature.
Clean your dryer's lint screen after every use. The same goes
for the washer.
Always fill washers to capacity if possible. Doing partial loads
will increase costs and take more of your time.
Clean your refrigerator's coils with a brush or vacuum to increase
efficiency.
During the Summer months, consider cooking more with crock-pots
and microwaves to keep the kitchen cool and save on gas. |
